Eye on Education: 50 States Project

At Edison Elementary in Minot today a group of fourth grade students became teachers The kids have been working on a 50 States research project since the beginning of the school year Each student picked a state they re interested in and kept a portfolio of work from different subject areas throughout the year including social studies art and english Melissa Stanley teaches the class She can tell her students are enjoying their role reversal and have actually learned the material Melissa Stanley 4th Grade Teacher It s fun to be ready to show somebody else what you know and it gives them the opportunity to teach others which you do indeed know they fully understand something if they re able to teach it to somebody else Today the kids displayed their work and taught other students about the state they ve been studying Fourth grader Matthew Moen showed a real interest in the state he chose Matthew Moen 4th Grader I picked Wyoming because um I would like to live there one day and they ve go a lot to do with Agriculture and I kinda wanna be like a gold miner or something They mine gold and they ve got coal and cattle and stuff The fourth graders showed off their projects to other Edison Elementary classes and even a few parents were able to check out the displays
