The announcement today came as a surprise to many in the Agriculture industry The state leaders and farmers and ranchers we spoke with are pleased with the nomination Brad Feldman reports Pleasantly surprised That s how North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Roger Johnson reacts to the nomination Roger Johnson ND Agriculture Commissioner He s a very good administrator I think that is exactly what the department of Agriculture will need now Johnson says the Farm Bill will most likely be Schafer s number one priority when he is confirmed by the Senate Roger Johnson ND Agriculture Commissioner A part of who he is is understanding North Dakota and so he will ask the questions about whether a particular provision is going to impact farmers positively or negatively Schafer s nomination is not just being felt in the state capitol Farmers and ranchers in the area are weighing in on one of their own Farmer we dont know what his philosphy is now So we are going to see what that is Is he going to try to fit in with the picture or is he going to make some tracks of his own Farmer I d hope being he is from North Dakota he can work for the farmer or rancher They even have some advice for Schafer when he settles into his new position Farmer I d like to see him let packing plants test for BSE Farmer I would like to see him pass COOL but to simplify it Wade Moser ND Stockmen s Association We need a very strong advocate for trade in ag products We still get beat up by Korea and Japan on some of our restrictions that are on our beef and those need to be resolved Besides his two terms in the governor s office Schafer s ancestors farmed throughout their lives His experience may be why Schafer is up job Johnson says it should be a quick confirmation by the US Senate Brad Feldman KX News
