Convenient Consistent Tonight Ag Reporter Sarah Gustin takes you to Carrington where new feed research is being tested on one ranch in hopes those pellets could soon be landing in your own bunk Why mix three ingredients when all you need is one Vern Anderson NDSU Animal Scientist We are producing a new commodity feed that has some attraction in both the cow calf and the feedlot and the dairy and maybe the swine not only in North Dakota but throughout the region and Canada NDSU Animal Scientist Dr Vern Anderson is working to make Superfeeds a trademarked product that you could soon be feeding Vern Anderson NDSU Animal Scientist The recipe is not hard fast or concrete It can be multiple ingredients at any combination What we are really trying to achieve is consistencey of a recipe so that we are not producing a product that is based on screenings it is based on qualtiy products that are used at the same rate today tomorrow and next year Anderson says your Superfeed could be a protein supplement or a complete feed It all depends on your need and what you want to feed Vern Anderson NDSU Animal Scientist Some have too much moisture some don t flow very well some have too much sulfer some are too much fiber some are really high in protein some are really low in protein some don t palate really well What we are trying to do is cover all those sins combine all these co-products into some marketable ingredients Maybe six basic feed rations The Spickler Ranch is working with NDSU in testing this new feed variety These bulls have been on Superfeeds since weaning Spicklers pellets are 1 3 peas 1 3 wheat midds and 1 3 dry distillers Justin Spickler Feeding Superfeeds One of the reasons we have peas in there is too keep the bulls comfortable and to keep them feeling full and satiating We probably have less injury than ever the bulls have horsed around a little less and as far as gains and performance there has ben no change it wouldn t be significant either better or worse They are right on track Spickler says they always feed all 3 ingredients but now it comes in a quick and easy more accurate pelleted form Justin Spickler Feed Superfeeds I think it is a very good supplement to be included at two to three pounds in growing rations For commercial produers it isn t as supplemental source of protein with highly digestable fiber sources of energy Anderson hopes Superfeeds can be available to all producers in the near future East of Carrington for KX News I am Sarah Gustin NDSU recently recieved a 30-thousand dollar APUC grant to help get the project started Anderson says NDSU will help any feed or processing company interested in producing Superfeeds with marketing and promotion support

Abandon Farm Burns West of Minot

Fire Crews from Minot Rural and Burlington had their hands full tonight as a fire at an abandon farm on the southwest edge of Minot went up in flames At around 7 30 tonight a fire was reported just west of the YMCA Fire quickly spread throughout the farmstead that is no longer used At least two building a large chicken coupe and a house were consumed and destroyed Several others appeared to be damaged along with hay bales around the property Embers from the fire also sparked smaller fires to the east in fields next to 16th Street and the YMCA A west wind and access to the site because of muddy fields and a slough were hampering efforts to keep the fire under control Firefighters are still on site putting out hot spots There s no indication yet on what may have started the blaze According to the Ward County Sheriff s Department the owner of the property lives in Duluth Minnesota and none of the buildings have been used for some time

A view from the top defines just how much grain spilled and how much damage was done when the 720-thousand bushel bin collapsed at SunPrairie Grain in Minot - in the early morning hours of March 25th Nearly two weeks later progress is being made to carefully reclaim and clean the hard red spring wheat but at a slow pace because of all the debris hidden within the grain Brad Haugeberg Minot SunPrairie Grain Manager On this side we re using payloaders and they re running it across a screener to shake out all the metal parts and all the other things Grain Vacuum machine Brad Haugeberg Minot SunPrairie Grain Manager On the back side they re using they re using two big commercial vacuums truck vacs and they re doing the same thing with another screen on the other side SunPrairie Grain Manager Brad Haugeberg says when the bin let go countless nuts bolts and washers that were holding the bin together mixed with the grain along with large and small piece of tin from the bin All of which have to be separated before the grain can be loaded into rail cars to be shipped At the same time safety is still a concern The collapsing bin compromised the integrity of its twin that was full of sunflowers Brad Haugeberg Minot SunPrairie Grain Manager There s damage been inflicted to it all the way up and down that side so that bin will have to come down Along with that the force of the grain lifted rail cars off the tracks and piled up underneath them The grain vacs are carefully maneuvering around the 14 000 pound cars as they extract the grain All the while structural engineers are methodically examining the wreckage to determine what caused the massive failure Brad Haugeberg Minot SunPrairie Grain Manager Probably everyone of them has a different theory But the one thing they all agree upon is that they will determine the origin and cause once they get enough of it uncovered Haugeberg expects the work to last three week a lengthy considering it only took 20 working hours to fill the bin at harvest Brad Haugeberg Minot SunPrairie Grain Manager Because there is some safety issues yeah we re working strictly daylight hours which is roughly 7 a m to 8 p m Even with the amount of debris Haugeberg hopes to reclaim a vast majority of the grain that was in the bin The cost to pick the grain off the ground clean it and reload it is expected to cost over a million dollars The cost to replace the bins and who s paying for the damage is still as unknown at this point as the cause of the failure But Haugeberg says all those questions will be answered in due time With Your Eye On Agriculture Shaun Sipma KX News
